Technopoly or not Technopoly

 Came across a new article by Cal Newport. While remaining faithful to the ideas expressed in his recent (or not so) publications, I find the argument one sided : It is only natural that freedom of speech will open gates for all kind of stuff, and usually "not so nice" ideas will also emerge in the public info-field.

This is the usual discussion of how bad a "tool" can be. A smart citizen should not use a tool without reading the user manual, and nobody will give children tools or toys that are restricted for their age.

And it might be an error to consider that the role of "parent" should be endorsed by the government. 

The society needs to be educated, not restricted.

Creativity & Graph Theory

 A blog reading, and a discussion with a friend about graph theory, made me recall a fun book I've read some time ago written by Austin Kleon, author of "Steal like an Artist". The book is -surprisingly enough - about poetry and inspiration: Newspaper Blackout. TLDR : The author connects words from a random text to create new meanings.

Scientists, like artists, create content/concepts/inventions/theories based on some context and existing stuff (we call that bibliography). This overcomes the "blank page" monster, because basically what we need to do, is to catch some existing works (inspirations, words) and to connect them, creating something new.  So basically, we connect dots, or "nodes", and the contribution is the new connexion that completes the graph.

With time and experience, we become able to create nodes (new works) to help close the gap between contexts that might seem beyond reach. In this case, we imagine links, and we connect these links with a new node.

It is a trend nowadays, since so much tools focus on that "spatial" thinking and creation. If you want to test that, and you're a scientist, check that : inciteful.

If you're not, you can apply that to your notes or diary using Obsidian or Logseq and the graph view to find inspiration.

The shift from production tools to organization tools

 Interesting post from Cal Newport on the shift from production tools in business (such as word processors ...) to organization tools (wrike, trello and such). Obviously, it is about knowledge workers.

I have to comment that they (knowledge workers) are rediscovering the wheel. Workflow normalization is an "ancient" concept in industry, and such tools (CAD - CAM and PLM software, then ERP solutions) and philosophies (Fordism, Toyotism, ...) are used widely to improve the production.

One can extrapolate on that saying that "data" is the new "product", and it makes sense in the context of the "data" revolution.

Maybe even some robust workflows will emerge in the actual "far west" of workflow solutions.

How to promote research & publications

I just followed on webinar on promoting research using repositories for preprints + social media. Not that I am stranger to this, but never was truly convinced. I still however check this kind of webinar, to see if new ideas appear (and it did - i learned about PCI).

I am convinced though that the correct way to do it is like this for example

You dont need to do it at Tao level, but even for reviewers, students  or casual readers it would be of immense help. It is actualy better to tweet the blogpost that directly the paper.

PS : the funniest thing about the blog above, is that I noticed just today that it was Tao's. And I am following the updates from 2015 something.

 Un outil sympathique, dérivé du logiciel surfulater (RIP), vient d'être mis à jour.

Clibu Notes

Permet une prise de notes ubiquitaire, avec des capacités offline et assez robuste (voir ce post en anglais).

Dans le domaine des logiciels PKM, qui est assez saturé par ailleurs, clibu se distingue par une excellente captation des pages web, y compris assez complexes, et reste simple d'utilisation.

What not to do when writing a scientific paper.

An excellent post by Pr. R Hyndman about basic rules of journal manuscript rejection. While my research topic are far away form forecasting, it is clear that all rules are directly appliable for Automatic Control in general and Fault Detection and Diagnosis in particular.

So, if you want to succeed in your submission, it is about :

1. Choosing the right journal
2. Providing an up to date bibliography including references and citations from the journal you're submitting to and the best journals around.
3. Contributing new ideas - not "epsilon" developments.
4. Choosing wisely you illustrative experimentations or simulations and comparing your approach to the best works around.
5. Refraining from "obviously" discutable claims - the reviewers are not stupid.

Playbook vs Android

Court billet posté à partir de l'appli Plogger de ma Playbook. Malgré les années, elle est bien plus agréable à utiliser qu'une Android. La standardisation, c'est bien, mais je regrette que des solutions ergonomiques aussi judicieuses ne soient pas reprises.

Un outil  de rédaction et d'organisation extrêmement puissant, ConnectedText -ou CT pour les intimes- permet de répondre aux besoins d'une personne moderne travaillant régulièrement avec des textes et ayant des besoins organisationnels.

L'outil ne livre pas tous les secrets au premier abord, mais il est monstrueusement efficace après un rodage de quelques semaines.

ReactOS Project

Un projet Open Source d’un système d’exploitation basé sur Win NT. Le développement est en alpha 0.3.15, donc ce n’est utilisable que pour des tests.

Néanmoins, ce projet, si il aboutit – je ne sais pas si Microsoft regardera cela d’un œil bienveillant + les problèmes de propriété intellectuelle lié aux brevets MS – résoudra immédiatement plein de problèmes aux personnes souhaitant profiter de leurs applications habituelles sans passer par émulateurs sous Linux.

“Developping Skill Muscle” ou comment anticiper les changements dans son environnement professionnel

Un post intéressant sur TheSimpleDollar, qui rappelle quelques points fondamentaux qui font la différence entre une personne “remplaçable” et “irremplaçable”. Le postulat est que si vous ne faites que suivre les instructions, vous vous ferez remplacer par quelqu’un qui fera la même tâche en étant rémunéré moins. Il faut savoir donc prendre des initiatives et être créatif dans l’exécution des tâches.

Cette créativité peut s’obtenir en diversifiant son champ d’activité (pendant son temps libre) ou en profitant de “trous” dans son emploi du temps pour faire exécuter des tâches supplémentaires en relation avec son activité professionnelle.

Par ailleurs, en faisant cela, le “potentiel d’adaptation” personnel aux changements du workflow ou à de nouvelles tâches imposées sera d’autant plus augmenté.

C’est en somme l’approche d’un chercheur scientifique adaptée à la vie professionnelle en général.

La relation entre l’organisation/rangement de l’espace de travail avec la productivité

Un post intéressant, basé sur des études assez récentes (2010-2011) sur les point clés qui influencent la productivité. Par exemple , le mobilier au coins arrondis permet d’améliorer la créativité/productivité en provoquant un état d’esprit positif. D’autres points comme la personnalisation, la présence de plantes et de fenêtres, l’utilisation des couleurs et l’organisation spatiale des éléments sont abordés.

Un exception qui confirme la règle : un bureau “fouilli'” stimule(rait) l’imagination.

Une idée lumineuse ! L. Musgrove (auteur du post A Visual Final | The Illustrated Professor -en anglais-) demande aux étudiants de rédiger une croquinote résumant ce qu'ils ont retenu de son cours. Certaines propositions sont très sympathiques, par exemple :

Ce genre de fonctionnalité existe dans de bons EDI, mais pour un usage occasionnel, rien ne vaut le tout-gratuit. Alphabetizer, Text Mechanic et Team Maker sont cités.

Reflexions sur le RSS et son écosystème

Préambule :

Je poste moins depuis quelque temps et c'est surtout du à 3 facteurs

• manque de temps, classique...
• utilisation d'une tablette nouvellement (une paire de mois) acquise : utiliser la tablette rend passif.... l'acteur devient consommateur.
• destruction de mon écosystème de veille..... maudit google (c'est idiot de dire cela sur blogger, je sais bien)

Alors Google Reader est décédé, paix a son code source. Se rabattre sur du RSS desktop (Feedemon qui est devenu gratuit, Webreader est abandonné) semble la solution la plus pérenne, mais sans la synchronisation, dur dur.... Dans le domaine des services web AOL, DIGG et Feedly s'installent comme compétiteurs mais pas d'écosystème complet pour l'instant (mobile-tablette-desktop-cloud).

Espérons que cela se créera bientôt
